Church leaders call for national reconciliation ahead of 2027 elections

The Association of Houses of Bishops and Pastors of Kenya, led by National Chairman Bishop Robert Okuwa, is calling for peace, unity and national cohesion as the country approaches the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a press briefing in Nairobi on Wednesday, the association expressed concern over political rhetoric, misinformation and disinformation, warning that such narratives could threaten peaceful coexistence and deepen ethnic divisions.

The clergy has urged political leaders to avoid divisive statements and called on churches not to surrender their pulpits to politicians for political mobilisation.

Bishop Okuwa also raised concern over the threat of political goonism before, during and after the elections, urging security agencies and other government institutions to take firm action against individuals involved in violence and intimidation.

They further condemned corruption and the alleged misappropriation of public funds, calling for greater accountability and transparency in the management of national resources.

On former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s recent remarks regarding the outcome of the 2022 General Election, the clergy expressed concern, saying such comments could undermine national peace and unity.

The association has also called on President William Ruto and his former Deputy President to pursue reconciliation and dialogue, saying political harmony is essential for the country’s peace and prosperity.

The clergy has further urged the government to respect media freedom and called on Kenyans to reject tribal rhetoric and embrace national unity.

On the proposed Dangote Refinery in Lamu, the association says it fully supports the project but wants the government to assure Kenyans, particularly local communities, of employment opportunities at the refinery.

The clergy is also calling for fair recruitment and good remuneration for Kenyans who will be employed at the facility, saying local participation and economic opportunities could help address concerns and reduce tensions surrounding the project.
