Kitale Golf club sets date for hosting caddies tournament

Kitale Golf Club is set to host its caddies tournament on October 12.

The initiative spearheaded by Oringe Waswa is aimed at recognizing the often-overlooked professionals who play a central role in the sport.

Explaining the motivation behind the tournament, Waswa said caddies remain essential to the game despite receiving little formal recognition.

"Caddies play a critical role in golf, yet they are not recognised the way they should be," Waswa said.

He added, “This tournament is our way of giving them the platform and the respect they deserve.”

Caddies are widely regarded within golfing circles as more than bag carriers.

They read greens, advise on club selection, track course conditions and often serve as a steadying presence for players under pressure owing to their knowledge built over years on the course, frequently without formal recognition or reward.

The Kitale event follows a growing trend among golf clubs across the region to organize dedicated caddies' tournaments, offering these professionals a rare opportunity to compete rather than support, showcase their own skill on the course, and be celebrated for their contribution to the sport.
